Social Fabric is more than a website... We have a gorgeous shop on the High Street of Totnes - an ancient Devon market town in southwest England, run by Caroline and Saj. We have shelves crammed full of lovely yarn and eyecatching fabrics, haberdashery, great craft books and our ever expanding range of Social Fabric craft kits for adults and children.

We also run workshops several times a week in sewing, knitting, crochet, lampshade making, patchwork and quilting, dressmaking, pattern cutting, felting and more. It's all great fun and since 2012 we've got to know hundreds of lovely people who come and spend time in our shop, crafting, drinking tea and learning new skills. We’re especially proud of our children’s sewing sessions where kids as young as six learn how to make bags, toys and clothes on grown-up sewing machines – they love it and we really enjoy sharing our skills with children who are keen to learn.

We hope you like what we do.

This is where we hang out in real life!

So how did we get here?

Social Fabric opened its doors in August 2012 in a little shop right at the very top of the street in the old Post Office. It was the brainchild of Caroline who had spent twenty years working as a journalist, author and editor, and who had had enough of sitting alone at a computer at home. She met Saj in a fabric shop in Totnes while still dreaming of what Social Fabric might one day become and asked her to come on board to teach sewing.

“I was going bonkers with just the dog to talk to all day and I’d spent a lot of time and money travelling to do craft workshops in other towns, which I loved. But I realised that only part of it was the actual making – there was more to it than that. The best bit was being creative with other people -- sharing ideas, getting inspiration, helping someone fix a problem, being shown a new technique. And doing all that while having a chat, a cup of tea and cake seemed to me the perfect way to spend a day.”

So the idea of Social Fabric was born. A cool place in Totnes where people can come together and learn new skills – or dust off long forgotten ones.

But it became too much for me to do on my own… and while Saj had been teaching sewing she had also been working at several of her own business ideas. But when the planners thwarted her own business opportunity, a partnership seemed to be the perfect answer.

So in spring 2013 Saj came on board as a partner and now shares in creating the vision for Social Fabric, putting in the long hours and coming up with all sorts of brilliant ideas for workshops, classes and kids’ clubs. She's also equally good at spending money on yummy fabric and yarn to stock the shop with!

“I love it here – there is something magic about this place. I love teaching the kids, I get a huge kick from seeing people make something beautiful that they’d never thought they could make and it’s great fun to be building a business like this in Totnes, which is a really creative place to live. I absolutely love it - hard work, but we have great fun too."

If you are visiting Devon please do drop in and see us and if not, we hope you find some gorgeous things to buy on our website.
